Snam and Fluxys yesterday reached an agreement to acquire E.ON’s 15.09% stake in Interconnector (UK), owner and operator of the subsea pipeline between the UK (Bacton) and Belgium (Zeebrugge) providing a strategic bi-directional link between the UK and the continental gas trading places.

Last January, Snam and Fluxys entered into a strategic alliance aimed at promoting the integration of the European gas networks and subsequently agreed in February to jointly acquire Eni’s 16.41% stake in Interconnector (UK). As with the acquisition of Eni’s stake, both companies are to contribute 50% each in the acquisition of E.ON’s stake.

Carlo Malacarne, CEO of Snam, said: “Today’s announcement represents a further confirmation of Snam’s commitment to becoming a major integrated player in the European regulated gas business through the development of the North-South corridor and the creation of a Southern European gas hub. The agreement also fosters our partnership with Fluxys and gives a further contribution to enhancing flexibility and security of supply in Europe, in line with the recommendations and provisions of the EU’s third legislative package”.

Walter Peeraer, Managing Director of Fluxys, commented: “This new agreement strengthens our partnership with Snam to enhance security of supply by enabling South to North flows between Italy and the UK. Our venture will connect the gas trading places in the Northwest and the South of Europe and stimulate deeper liquidity across the European gas system. We are also looking forward to sharing our cross-European know-how with Interconnector (UK) to support the company’s development also after its exemption period until 2018.”

The total consideration for the 15.09% stake in Interconnector (UK) amounts to € 127 million. Snam and Fluxys expect to complete the transaction by the end of 2012. Prior to completion, the transaction requires approval from the relevant authorities as well as from the Board of Interconnector (UK).

An underwater turbine that is set to be used in Scotland’s first and only consented tidal power project has successfully completed an initial testing period in Orkney, and is providing electricity for homes and businesses on the island of Eday, one of Orkney’s northern isles.

The 1MW power generator was installed last December, in some of the worst weather conditions Scotland has experienced in more than a decade, and has since been undergoing a range of tests in the fast flowing tidal waters around Orkney. The initial testing period has been very positive with the device achieving full export power.

The test device in Orkney aims to fully prove that the technology can operate efficiently in Scotland’s fast flowing tides, that monitoring and maintenance operations can be honed and to help drive down costs in operations and installation. ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) plan to use this technology as part of the world’s first tidal turbine array in the Sound of Islay. The company’s plans to develop a 10MW tidal array in Islay received planning consent from the Scottish Government in March 2011.

Keith Anderson, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables said: “The concept of generating electricity from the natural movement of the tide is still relatively new – and test projects like this are vital to help us understand how we can fully realise the potential of this substantial energy source.

“The performance of the first HS1000 device has given us great confidence so far. Engineers were able install the device during atrocious weather conditions, and it has been operating to a very high standard ever since. We have already greatly developed our understanding of tidal power generation, and this gives us confidence ahead of implementing larger scale projects in Islay and the Pentland Firth.

“Scotland has the best tidal power resources in Europe, and that’s why we are seeing world leading technologies tested here. This device is already providing renewable electricity for Orkney, but the potential is there in our waters to make a significant contribution towards our overall energy needs and our carbon reduction targets.”

The HS1000 tidal turbine has been developed by ANDRITZ HYDRO Hammerfest, whose majority shareholder is Andritz Hydro, and also includes partners Iberdrola and Hammerfest Energi. The 1MW machine can power the annual electricity needs of 500 homes.

Seen as one of the world’s most advanced tidal turbine designs, a prototype device has been generating electricity in Norway for over 6 years. The design is based on a mixture of technology used in traditional onshore wind turbines, subsea oil & gas production and in hydro-power plants.

The turbine can be monitored from the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) base in Eday, but engineers can also operate and inspect the device from Glasgow using mobile connections and an on-board camera.

Stein Atle Andersen, Managing Director of ANDRITZ HYDRO Hammerfest said: “The 1MW pre-commercial device is an important step in our staged strategy for developing reliable and cost efficient tidal energy converting devices and power plants. The tests being carried out so far have confirmed the design basis for the technology and given comfort concerning the device’s capacity.”

“We are still early in the testing programme with endurance, availability and reliability being the most imminent factors for asserting a proper basis for developing commercial tidal energy power plants. However, we are already well into design engineering for the first power plant.”

“In total we believe this is an important step forward for the industry in general by demonstrating that commercial size developments are feasible.”

Rolls-Royce, the global power system company, has secured a £6 million contract to provide an integrated design, power & propulsion and equipment systems package for an offshore supply vessel to be built at Norwegian ship yard Simek AS for ship owner Atlantic Offshore.

The vessel is a Rolls-Royce UT 755 LC design and will be equipped with main engines, propulsion system, steering gear, rudder, deck machinery, bulk handling equipment as well as control and automation systems.

Magne Hjelle, Rolls-Royce, Sales Manager said: “We are delighted to sign yet another contract with Simek AS. This underscores our position as the market leader in high specification offshore vessels, and showcases our world-class capability to deliver fully integrated ship design, power & propulsion and equipment packages.”

The vessel will undertake transport, supply and service duties between onshore supply bases and offshore drilling sites. The deck area is arranged for transporting pipes and containers while tanks below deck are used to transport fluids including water, oil, mud and brine. The vessel will have accommodation for a crew of thirty people.

Due to its reduced fuel consumption, low noise and vibration level and good supply capacity, the UT 755 design has become the world’s most popular offshore supply and service vessel, with over 180 delivered or on order. This order is the 24th Rolls-Royce designed vessel to be built at Simek AS. The vessel is expected to be delivered in summer 2013.

BP announced today it has ordered four new platform support vessels (PSV) to help deliver its long term business strategy in the North Sea. The vessels will be deployed to support its West of Shetland (WoS) and Norwegian operations and be delivered between the winter of 2013 and summer of 2014.

The purpose built and highly specified vessels have been designed to provide long term support to BP’s North Sea business and will provide the capabilities BP requires to deliver its strategy more efficiently and safely. The vessels will have oil spill response capability and special tanks to transport fluids required for planned enhanced oil recovery (EOR) schemes.

Performance and safety will also be further improved by having dedicated crews on long term hire, minimising turnover and enhancing familiarity with BP’s processes.

Trevor Garlick, Regional President for BP North Sea, said, “Our long term commitment to the North Sea gives us the confidence to make major investments in vital support services. These new vessels will provide BP with a number of safety and commercial benefits, as well as allow for the greater deployment of technology. Improving our capability to recover more oil from our reservoirs is crucial to the future of the North Sea.”

The announcement is also positive news for the local economies in Scotland and Norway, as nearly 80% of the total project and operating costs will be spent there. The operating and maintenance work will be locally supplied and officers and crew will be UK and Norwegian qualified mariners. The vessels’ operators will support seafarer’s development by sponsoring personnel through their professional qualifications, including an Officer Cadet training scheme.

Mark Hardie, UK Logistics Manager for BP’s North Sea Region, said: “This is a significant investment in BP’s North Sea marine capability and will bring a number of business and local benefits from late 2013 onwards. The UK dedicated vessels will be based and maintained in Aberdeen.”

The arrangement is structured such that BP Shipping has contracted Hyundai to build the vessels and then hire them to BP Exploration Operating Company on a 15 year bareboat term charter. This project is consistent with BP’s strategy for marine offshore supply vessels that promotes vessel ownership where long term ‘life of field’ can be demonstrated.

Stork Technical Services, the leading global provider of knowledge-based asset integrity management services for the oil and gas, chemical and power sectors, won the ‘Associate Member’ prize at this year’s IADC North Sea Chapter (NSC) Annual Safety Awards.

The award recognises an Associate members’ safety achievements over the past year which can include launching schemes to improve safety performance, technical or operational innovations which reduce risk or any notable safety achievements.

The presentation, in front of more than 400 industry leaders and guests, was made by Jon L Richards, Chairman IADC North Sea Chapter, at the ceremony on 11 May at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Stork received the award for a range of initiatives rolled out as part of its REACH safety programme, which helped reduce the company’s lost time frequency rate in 2011 by more than 35% in the UKCS and over 30% globally, following on from a 51% reduction in 2010 across the UKCS and 35% globally the year before.

One initiative involved Stork’s health & fitness advisor undertaking regular visits to client sites to advise the company’s operatives how they should physically prepare for and work throughout each workscope to reduce the likelihood of injury. Stork’s innovative onsite approach means a fit for purpose approach for each individual and job is developed, which has led to a significant reduction in the occurrence and likelihood of injuries such as back strains.

The company also launched an industry-first hot bolt clamp system that enables the safe removal and replacement of corroded bolts on live flanged connections that have eight bolts or less. The clamp system improves the safety for offshore operatives and the asset as a whole by reducing the likelihood of hydrocarbon releases. The system has been extensively field-tested and was successfully utilised by Stork operatives for a recent project on a Chevron North Sea Limited operated asset in the North Sea.

Mike Mann, SVP – Global HSSEQ for Stork Technical Services, said: “Winning the Associate Members award is a great achievement and testament to the hard work and determination of our employee community to make safety priority each and every day. REACH has been a great success and it provides us with the platform to roll-out initiatives that have a significant positive impact on our safety culture and performance.

“Safety and innovation are two of Stork’s core values and the success of the hot bolt clamps demonstrates our commitment to them. The technology delivers significant safety benefits to those working on an asset and improves environmental performance for Operators by reducing the likelihood of a hydrocarbon release.”

A WIRRAL based environmental consultancy is to manage marine-life protection measures at one of the biggest wind farms currently in construction in Europe, after securing a £multi-million contract with Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm Limited.

CMACS Ltd will deliver a robust monitoring programme throughout the wind farm’s construction, ensuring the safety of marine mammals, such as dolphins, porpoise and seals.

The monitoring will also provide vital data on marine life in the vicinity of the wind farm, and will contribute to wider marine mammal conservation works.

Announcing the contract to CMACS Ltd, RWE npower renewables’ Gwynt y Môr Project Director, Toby Edmonds said: “This is a really important contract for us as we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously.

“It’s crucial to us that marine mammals in Liverpool Bay are unharmed throughout our construction activity

“Marine mammals such as dolphins and porpoise usually stay well away from any construction activity. By deploying specialist monitors and setting up an exclusion mitigation zone we will ensure they remain unaffected during the construction works.

“Our offshore engineering activity will start very softly in order to act as a warning to marine mammals to avoid the area.

“This mitigation strategy has been approved by the Welsh Government Marine Consents Unit, in consultation with Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and is in compliance with an EU directive preventing harm to marine mammals.”

Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, harbour porpoises and seals are all visitors to Liverpool Bay at times.

RWE npower renewables can draw on a wealth of marine-life experience, gained during the construction of North Hoyle and Rhyl Flats, also in the same stretch of water.

During construction of Gwynt y Môr, a 500 metre exclusion zone will be set up around the wind farm installation vessels, and piling work will not start until marine mammals are outside that area.

CMACS Ltd will deploy three people on board the installation vessel or from a dedicated survey vessel to monitor marine mammal activity day and night during offshore piling of the foundations.

Hydrophones will also be placed into the water to listen for marine mammal acoustic activity both day and night.

Dr Ian Gloyne-Phillips, Director of CMACS Ltd said: “CMACS is delighted to have won this major contract which confirms our position as a leading marine environmental company to the offshore renewables industry.

“We are particularly looking forward to operating a survey vessel out of the new port facility on the River Mersey in Birkenhead, just a few miles from our own headquarters.

“Projects such as Gwynt y Môr are proving extremely important not just to ourselves but in securing jobs and contributing to growth in industries such as ports, vessel charters and seafarers; it is particularly encouraging to see the expansion of facilities near Cammell Laird and in Mostyn in North Wales in support of the offshore wind farm industry.”

In addition to the observation work during piling, CMACS Ltd will be compiling a list of marine mammal sightings by all vessels involved in the offshore construction of Gwynt y Môr.

Crew transfer vessels will help record sightings, and findings will be used to support environmental monitoring of Gwynt y Môr and contribute to wider marine mammal conservation work.

The findings will also be passed to CCW and shared with SeaWatch Foundation, a national marine conservation research charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises around the UK.

At 576MW, Gwynt y Môr will be one of the largest offshore wind farms currently in construction in Europe. The project is a shared investment between partners RWE Innogy, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Siemens. Once fully operational, energy generation from Gwynt y Môr is expected to be equivalent to the average annual needs of around 400,000 homes.

Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm is being constructed 13 kilometres off the North Wales coast, in water depths of 12-28 metres, and was granted approval by DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) back in December 2008.

Apache Corporation yesterday afternoon announced that an extension well had initial production rates higher than any oil well drilled at the Beryl Field in the U.K. North Sea since 2001.

“We’re very excited about this well because we’ve found virgin reservoir pressure in two of three zones containing more than 300 feet of net true vertical pay,” said Jim House , regional vice president and managing director of Apache North Sea . “This is one of the best wells drilled in the past 10 years in the Beryl Field and we expect it to open up further development opportunities.”

The B72 was drilled as a deviated well from the Beryl Bravo Platform and logged a total of 619 feet measured depth (305 feet TVD) of net oil pay in three separate Jurassic aged reservoir units. The well was completed in the high quality Beryl-I reservoir, which was found at original pressure of 5220 psi and commenced production at a rate of 11,625 barrels of oil per day (b/d) and 13.1 million cubic feet (MMcf) of natural gas per day.

Finding the Beryl-1 reservoir in a fault block at original field pressures within the Beryl field is an encouraging result that highlights the complexity and remaining potential of the field. A new 3D seismic survey is planned for summer 2012, the first since 1997.

Apache completed the acquisition of Mobil North Sea Limited from ExxonMobil at year-end 2011, which includes operating interests in Beryl, Nevis , Ness, Nevis South, Skene and Buckland fields.

Apache owns 50 percent of Beryl Field and is the operator. Other field owners are Hess Ltd. (22.22 percent), Enterprise Oil Ltd. (22.78 percent), and OMV (U.K.) Ltd. (5 percent).

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond while speaking on Monday in Norway, referred to progress made on NorthConnect, according to the UPI news portal.

The NorthConnect is a planned venture to join the British and Scandinavian electricity grids by laying a subsea cable that would act as a two-way traffic route in renewable power, exchanging Scotland’s wind for Norway’s hydro power.

Mr Salmond said that a high-voltage interconnector between the two countries can help create a powerful renewable energy alliance between the nations. That could play a key role in establishing a single, integrated European market for renewable energy, he said.

The 1.4 GW link project, which would stretch 372 miles from Peterhead in northeast Scotland to Samnanger, is developed by the Swedish Vattenfall and Scottish and Southern Energy.

The connection would be two-way, enabling Scotland to use Norway’s hydropower resources when Scottish wind power supplies are low.

Aker Solutions is acquiring the mechanical workshop company Lyngdal Mek. Verksted (LMV), thereby increasing its capacity to assemble, test and overhaul drilling equipment especially for the North Sea market.

This is the second recent acquisition by Aker Solutions’ drilling technologies business in its home region, following the takeover of Herman Hansen Mek. Verksted, another assembly and test workshop, in March 2012. The transaction values for the deals are undisclosed.

“The takeover of Lyngdal Mek. Verksted is the latest example of our strategic moves to boost our capacity to serve drilling customers in the North Sea market. The acquisition of LMV will help us take a larger share of the upcoming overhaul market, facilitated by our growing installed base,” said Thor Arne Håverstad, head of Aker Solutions’ drilling technologies business.

The market outlook for drilling systems and equipment related activities is positive, both with regards to overhaul of installed equipment and new-build orders. Additionally, rigs with Aker Solutions’ equipment on delivered during the 2007-2008 boom are soon up for their first five year re-classification.

Increased capacity

The takeover of LMV is mainly expanding the Aker Solutions’ overhaul and upgrade capacity, as the company’s facilities in Kristiansand are expected to be fully utilised by new-build activities. The acquisition will also increase Aker Solutions’ flexibility and ability to further expand its production competence and facilities in Brazil and Asia Pacific.

“We are pleased to become an integrated part of Aker Solutions,” says Ingvald Ingebretsen, managing director and previous owner of LMV. “Our employees will no doubt remain a significant asset to Aker Solutions’ current staff of skilled workers, thanks to their extensive experience in overhauling Aker Solutions drilling equipment. Our workforce is stable, and could potentially grow even further.”

The acquisition of Herman Hansen secures Aker Solutions’ drilling technologies capacity and delivery capability as well as local assembly and testing competence for critical mechanical equipment.

About Lyngdal Mek Verksted

Lyngdal Mek. Verksted (LMV) is a mechanical workshop company located in Lyngdal in southern Norway. LMV currently employs 61 skilled workers plus contracted staff in disciplines such as hydraulics, mechanical engineering, welding, sheet metal, and more.

The facilities of LMV are well suited for large overhaul jobs with about 6 500 m2 of workshop area. Over the past five years the company has been a key sub-supplier to Aker Solutions’ drilling technologies business. LMV’s current scope of work for Aker Solutions includes assembly and testing, as well as overhaul and upgrade work on drilling equipment and special orders for rigs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Completion of the agreement is subject to clearance by Norwegian competition authorities.

Statoil transfers operatorship of the Vilje field in the North Sea to Marathon Oil Norge. The agreement does not involve any change of stakes in the production licence (PL 036D).

“Statoil is interested in good area solutions. We therefore find it natural that Marathon, as the biggest operator in the area, gets to optimise the values for the licensees,” says Jannicke Nilsson, Statoil’s head of operations North Sea West.

Thanks to this transfer of operatorship a rig that was planned to be used for the Vilje South development will be available for other Statoil drilling jobs. Portfolio management is a priority area in Statoil’s strategy, and the Norwegian continental shelf emerges as an area where such focus may add value.

In recent years Statoil has carried out several transactions and signed joint venture agreements to position Statoil as a financially robust, technology-focused upstream company.

This includes the agreement to sell assets to Centrica, the acquisition of Hess’ stake in the Snøhvit field, and the purchase and sales agreement with Total on the Valemon and Hild fields, which are under development.

The agreement with Marathon takes effect on 1 September 2012 subject to the approval of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The Vilje development includes two subsea wells tied in to the Alvheim production vessel. The field is located some 20 kilometres north-east of the Marathon-operated Alvheim field.

Coming on stream on 1 August 2008 Vilje is expected to produce 21 000 barrels of oil per day in 2010. An investment decision for Vilje South development has been made in the licence. First oil is expected at the end of 2013.

The licensees in PL 036D are Marathon Oil Norge AS (46.90 percent interest), Statoil Petroleum AS (28.85 percent) and Total E&P Norge AS (24.24 percent).

French supermajor Total informed the Department of Energy and Climate Change that their dynamic kill operation to try to stop the gas release from the Elgin well began yesterday.

DECC have been working closely with TOTAL and gave environmental consent to the company earlier in May to pump heavy mud into the well via a temporary pipeline connected to the G4 wellhead from the main support vessel, the West Phoenix semi-submersible drilling rig.

Depending on the precise conditions inside the well, the operation itself and the subsequent observation period will last a few days before it is possible to confirm whether the operation has been fully effective. The dynamic kill is the quickest option to control the release. Work on another option to drill a relief well is already underway.

A Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesman said: “We continue to monitor the situation closely and hope this operation successfully stops the gas release.”

Total on March 25 reported that a gas leak following a well operation occurred at the wellhead platform on the Elgin gas field in the UK North Sea approximately 240 km east of Aberdeen. The gas has been spewing into atmosphere ever since.

Elgin and Franklin are two high pressure/high temperature gas and condensate fields, which started production in 2001. They are located in the British North Sea, approximately 240 kilometers east of Aberdeen, in Scotland. The Elgin field was discovered in 1991 and the Franklin field in 1986.

EMGS recorded revenues of USD 55.6 million in the first quarter of 2012, up from USD 21.5 million in the first quarter of 2011. Contract sales totalled USD 53.0 million, whilst multi-client sales came in at USD 2.6 million.

In the corresponding period last year, EMGS recorded multi-client sales of USD 0.5 million. The growth in revenues is related to an increase in the vessel fleet as well as improved productivity. The company recorded 12 vessel months in the first quarter of 2012 as opposed to 6 in the first quarter of 2011.

Charter hire, fuel and crew expenses totalled USD 21.0 million in the first quarter of 2012, up from USD 10.5 million in the corresponding quarter in 2011 owing to an increase in the vessel fleet and operational activity in 2012. Capitalisation of multi-client costs amounted to USD 4.2 million in the first quarter of 2012. No capitalisation of multi-client costs was recorded in the first quarter of 2011.

Employee expenses increased from USD 9.9 million in the first quarter of 2011 to USD 13.8 million in the first quarter 2012 owing to higher operational activity, as reflected in the higher revenues. Other operational costs increased marginally.

Events in the quarter

On 3 January, EMGS and Schlumberger signed a cooperative agreement through which the parties offer to the industry their respective expertise in the marine electromagnetic related fields of processing, advanced modelling and earth model building. The agreement was effective from said date.

On 8 February, EMGS announced that it had secured pre-funding to start a multi-client 3D EM campaign in the Barents Sea, ahead of Norway’s 22nd licensing round. The company reported that data acquisition would commence in March using the vessel Atlantic Guardian.

On 28 March, EMGS announced that the vessel BOA Thalassa had completed planned 3D EM data acquisition under its current multi-year contract. The company reported that the vessel would continue to acquire 3D EM data on a project-to-project basis until the scope of a contract extension has been defined.

On 2 May, EMGS was awarded a contract worth in excess of USD 4 million by a new customer to acquire and process 3D electromagnetic (EM) data offshore Papua New Guinea. The company reported that data acquisition will be performed using the vessel EM Leader in the second quarter of 2012.

“We’re off to a great start to the year with the best first-quarter financial results in the company’s history. Today’s results, along with continued strong operational performance and favourable market developments, puts is in a good position to move the company forward and deliver record-high financial performance in 2012,” says Roar Bekker, EMGS chief executive officer.

EMGS, the marine EM market leader, uses its proprietary electromagnetic (EM) technology to support oil and gas companies in their search for offshore hydrocarbons. EMGS supports each stage in the workflow, from survey design and data acquisition to processing and interpretation. The company’s services enable integration of EM data with seismic and other geophysical and geological information to give explorationists a clearer and more complete understanding of the subsurface. This improves exploration efficiency, and reduces risks and the finding costs per barrel.

Tideland Signal, Dabbrook Services and Tranberg Systems of Denmark have joined forces to present a comprehensive service for specifying, supply and installation of navigation warning systems and all other low-voltage equipment on offshore wind farms on stand 321 at Global Offshore Wind, ExCel London from 13 to 14 June.

Tideland Signal is a leading global supplier of navigational aids and solar power systems to the world’s ports, harbours and offshore industries, while its sister company, Dabbrook Services Ltd. specializes in the installation of photovoltaic and other electrical systems offshore. Tranberg Systems, part of Norwegian based Tranberg AS, is also a long-standing associate of Tideland Signal and has extensive experience of the offshore power industry. Among the team manning the stand will be Søren Larsen of Tranberg, Ian Burgess of Tideland and Stuart Smith of Dabbrook.

The Tideland/Dabbrook/Tranberg offering covers everything from the specification, sourcing and supply of all low-voltage equipment required on offshore wind turbines, to project management, installation, maintenance, testing and certification. In addition to safe marking of offshore wind farms to protect against collisions and accidental damage caused by shipping, the consortium also supplies and installs a complete range of other low-voltage equipment, including power supplies, general lighting, aviation lights and winches.

The Tideland range of warning systems includes lanterns, fog signals, fog detectors and monitoring systems, all compliant with the requirements of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities’ new recommendations O.139 edition 1 of December 2008 covering the the marking of man-made offshore structures, which recommends that “consideration should be given to the use of synchronised lighting, different light characters and varied light ranges” and draws attention to the danger of interfering with shipborne and shore-based radar installations.

All Tideland systems can be solar-powered and may be conformed as highly sophisticated, remotely-monitored systems or simpler installation which can also be controlled from a remote, on-shore location. Tideland LED lanterns require little maintenance, offer minimal power consumption and an operating life in excess of 50,000 hours. The company has many years’ experience protecting offshore installations of every type around the globe, including the UK’s largest offshore wind farm to date at Lynn and Inner Dowsing in the Greater Wash, off the Lincolnshire coast.

DeTect has completed the installation of the MERLIN Avian Radar System at the wind farm substation on Thornton Bank, reports Windtech International.

Last year in January, the Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models (MUMM) acquired the radar system to track the bird movement along the coast at Zeebrugge.

After the completed monitoring at the shore, the MERLIN Avian Radar System was transferred to the C-Power substation at the Thornton Bank wind farm.

The Thorntonbank Wind Farm is an offshore wind farm, 28 km (17 mi) off the Belgian coast, in water ranging from 12 to 27 metres (39 to 89 ft) deep. Electricity production started in early 2009, with a capacity of 30 MW. The capacity is expected to be increased gradually to 300 MW in 2015.

On 4 May 2012, the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) granted Saipem SpA Norwegian Branch (Saipem) an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) for the Scarabeo 8 mobile drilling facility.

Scarabeo 8 is a semi-submersible drilling facility with a Moss CS 50 MkII design. It was built at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Palermo, Italy and completed at Westcon’s shipyard in Ølensvåg in Hordaland in 2011.

The facility is winterised, i.e. equipped for operations in Arctic waters. It is designed to operate in water depths from 70 to 3050 metres.

Scarabeo 8 is owned and operated by Saipem SpA Norwegian Branch.

The facility is registered in the Bahamas and Det Norske Veritas is the classification society.

An AoC is a statement from the PSA which expresses the authorities’ confidence that petroleum activity can be carried out with the facility within the regulatory framework.

It is the assessment of the PSA that petroleum activity can be carried using the Scarabeo 8 facility within the regulatory framework. The decision is based on information provided in the AoC application regarding the facility’s technical condition and the applicant’s organisation and management system, as well as the authorities’ verifications and other case processing.

The validity of the Acknowledgement of Compliance assumes that Saipem SpA Norwegian Branch ensures the facility and relevant parts of the company’s organisation and management system satisfy regulatory requirements, and that terms and assumptions in the PSA’s decision are safeguarded.

Aquaterra Energy has been awarded a contract to supply 12 centralisers for a platform in the North Sea.

The existing centralisers had reached their design life and will be replaced with new centralisers designed by Aquaterra. The centralisers, which will be optimised for the customer’s requirements, will be retrofitted around a 24″ OD conductor and conductor guide.

David Ward, Project Manager at Aquaterra Energy said: “We have provided a stringent centraliser design to our client to withstand a minimum lateral force of 15 tonnes, with a 15 year fatigue life. This will ensure that the centralisers last the full life of the asset with no required maintenance.”

Aquaterra Energy has a wealth of experience in the design, fabrication and installation of centralisers, with a supply history in excess of 50 customers in more than 10 countries. The company offers a complete centraliser package, from initial riser analysis, to tieback engineering and final offshore installation by experienced and professional service technicians. Aquaterra supplies a wide range of centralisers for a variety of requirements including fixed blade conductor, retrofit, polymer and inner casing centralisers, amongst many others.

The ‘Seven Borealis’, Subsea 7’s flag ship, is currently in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) for final outfitting at the Huisman facilities.

The vessel is the first customized version of Ulstein Sea of Solutions’ successful SOC 5000 vessel design and fully developed by the Netherlands based Ulstein design office. The vessel features an offshore mast crane which can lift 5000 mt and will be capable to perform both J-lay as S-lay operations.

‘Seven Borealis’ is the first Vessel of SOC 5000 Design:

In 2006/2007, Ulstein Sea of Solutions developed the SOC 5000 heavy lift vessel design. Early in 2012, ‘Seven Borealis’, the first vessel based on this design, set sail.

Originally contracted by Nordic Heavy Lift to Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore as a 5000 t heavy lift vessel, it has since been upgraded to a deepwater construction vessel for Subsea 7. Unlike the original SOC 5000 design, the ‘Seven Borealis’ incorporates a centre line pipelay firing line, enabled through lifting the vessel’s entire accommodation block and main crane. The vessel will also be equipped with a J-lay tower. The final outfitting of ‘Seven Borealis’ takes place in the Netherlands, and only a short distance from the designer’s offices.

In the opening months of 2012, Shipdock Harlingen was commissioned for an interesting and difficult job by Tranship BV from the Netherlands.

The company was commissioned to provide repair job for Tranship‘s Vigilant vessel, formerly a fisheries inspection vessel, which was purchased and added to the Tranship fleet in 2008.

Regarding the job, Shipdock’s project manager Michel Heerschop explained: “Beside a general inspection and some welding and piping work, we were faced with a couple of seriously big jobs. Both propeller-shafts had to be dismounted in order to overhaul the sealing gaskets. Leading eventually to a standard check where one of the shafts is completely removed and thoroughly inspected. The propeller blades were also repaired. In addition, one of the rudder bearings, consisting of two supporting cones, had to be replaced; due to the bearings size this necessitated cutting a large hole in the deck to provide access.”

Because of the Vigilant’s additional survey activities, an extra sonar array had to be mounted on the hull – including a new cable conduit running right through the middle of the ship. The biggest challenge here was actually the high-speed replacement of the vessel’s three generators with newly delivered Wärtsilä’s. For this operation, a hole was made through the starboard side of the hull into the auxiliary machine room, and a temporary prefabricated steel work-platform could be erected. In a few short days the new units were in place and the hull could be closed again.

Michel Heerschop added: “After our usual spit-and-polish treatment the Vigilant was bright and gleaming, ready to go back in the water. Then there followed a tuning and testing period for the new generators, after which the Vigilant finally went off to open sea. All in all, a great project with a good final result.”

First Minister Alex Salmond will begin a two day visit to Norway tomorrow (Monday) by addressing an international green energy conference in Bergen.

As well as renewables, his visit will also focus on economic opportunities and job creation in the oil and gas and aquaculture industries.

The visit comes against the background of Norway’s increasing economic importance to Scotland – moving from 10th largest export market in 2007 to 6th in 2010 with sales to the country reaching £815 million.

Mr Salmond is a keynote speaker at the renewable energy conference, hosted by Norwegian employers federation Norsk Industri. Other speakers include Norway’s Minister of Environmental Affairs Bård Vegar Solhjell, Hans Blix, former Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs and ex-Director of the International Atomic Energy Association; Dr. Michael Weinhold, CTO (Energy), Siemens and Ståle Tungesvik, Senior VP, Renewable Energy, Statoil.

The First Minister, who will have a meeting with Mr Solhjell at the conference, has been invited to outline Scotland’s ‘renewables revolution’, as the country aims to reach a target of generating the equivalent of 100 per cent of domestic electricity demand from renewable sources by 2020, while continuing as a net exporter of power.

In Oslo on Tuesday, Mr Salmond will meet with Aker Solutions, AF Group and Norway’s Minister for Oil & Energy Ola Morten Boe – two weeks before the First Minister is to launch an industry strategy for Scotland’s oil and gas industry.

Mr Salmond’s visit comes ahead of Norway’s National Day, on Thursday, when the country’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is due in Shetland for a number of events. This include the official opening of a new museum in Scalloway which will commemorate the ‘Shetland Bus’ organisation that played a key role in supporting the Norwegian resistance during the Second World War. Bruce Crawford, the Cabinet Secretary for Parliamentary Business and Government Strategy will represent the Scottish Government at the events in Shetland.

The First Minister said: “Scotland has strong historical, cultural and economic ties to Norway and it has become an increasingly important trading partner over the last four years, rising from our 10th largest export market in 2007 to 6th in 2010 with sales to the country reaching £815 million. At the same time, more than 130 Norwegian companies are operating around 280 subsidiaries in Scotland, with Aker Solutions and Marine Harvest among the major inward investors I will be meeting, to discuss their plans, this week.

“Clearly our two nations have a shared interest in the energy industry – both in the oil and gas and renewables sectors – as well as in the aquaculture industry, and these are the focus of my engagements in Bergen and Oslo. I look forward to building on our existing relationships and exploring new opportunities for collaboration and investment between our governments, agencies and businesses.”

Anne MacColl, chief executive of Scottish Development International added: “Scotland and Norway have strong historical links, which have been cemented by shared expertise and success in areas such as oil & gas and renewables, as well as the seafood industry. We recognise and value Norway as a very important export market for our companies, and this visit will play a critical role in ensuring we fully exploit this potential, and position Scotland firmly as an ideal place with which to do business.

”We’re seeing significant changes in patterns of world trade, and Scottish Development International is working closely with the Scottish Government to build strong links with key markets such as Norway, so that our companies can take full advantage of new and existing opportunities to grow their business.”

STX OSV Holdings Limited, a major global designer and shipbuilder of offshore and specialized vessels headquartered in Norway, reports robust order intake for the first quarter ended 31 March 2012 (“1Q 2012”) amounting to NOK 2.34 billion.

As at 31 March 2012, STX OSV’s total order book of 53 vessels is worth NOK 16,036 million.

Operating revenues were slightly lower than for the same period last year (“1Q 2011”), due to normal fluctuations in the project portfolio, and amounted to NOK 2,811 million. The Group’s EBITDA margin (EBITDA to total revenue) held steady at 14.0% compared to EBITDA margin of 13.8% for 1Q 2011.

The robust order intake signals a possible rebound in order activity for high-end offshore support vessels, which experienced a slowdown during the third and fourth quarters of 2011, although the Group has yet to witness a sustained higher level of new order intake.

Mr Roy Reite, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of STX OSV, said, “Despite persistent macroeconomic uncertainty, we believe the financing climate has somewhat improved, and funding is available to the strongest customers and the best projects. We see renewed demand for larger, more complex and customized vessels, which caters perfectly to STX OSV’s core capabilities. We remain confident in our ability to seize opportunities in a market upturn, and will continue to invest in technology to reinforce our competitive edge in the industry.”

Financial and Operating Review

STX OSV generated NOK 2,811 million in revenue for 1Q 2012, representing a decline of 12% from 1Q 2011, and EBITDA of NOK 393 million, a 10% decrease. EBITDA margin inched up to 14.0% for the quarter compared to 13.8% in 1Q 2011, on the back of continued stable operations, efficient project execution, and successful delivery of vessels.

The Group has maintained a strong cash position, with cash and cash equivalents of NOK 3,127 million as at 31 March 2012.

The new orders secured during 1Q 2012 have alleviated concerns about possible lower utilization levels at some of STX OSV’s shipyards in 2012. Relatively short delivery times for several of the new projects have led to rapidly increasing workload in Romania.

In Brazil, the existing shipyard is operating at very high load in order to ensure successful execution of projects in the existing order book, and development of the new yard is progressing. Vietnam reports stable operations and on-time delivery of the final vessel in the initial series of six.

Order Book, Deliveries and New Contracts

During 1Q 2012, four new vessel orders amounting to NOK 2,342 million were secured, and five vessels were delivered, bringing STX OSV’s total order book to 53 vessels worth NOK 16,036 million as at 31 March 2012. Of these, 29 are of STX OSV’s own design.

Notably, the new orders for the quarter comprise two Offshore Subsea Construction Vessels (OSCVs) and two large Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels (AHTS), all complex projects with contract values above the average of 2011 orders. Since the end of 1Q 2012, STX OSV has secured three additional contracts which include two OSCVs and one AHTS.

Outlook: Market Fundamentals in Place

Going forward, strong market fundamentals are expected to support growth, especially in the subsea support and construction segment, where demand is driven by increased offshore installation activity and growing order backlog for subsea contractors. Charter rates for large anchor handlers have continued their climb, underpinning demand in this segment.

AGR has been awarded a frame agreement with RWE Dea to provide reservoir services.

As a result of recent exploration successes, E&P firm RWE Dea is looking to AGR’s Reservoir Management for the provision of subsurface services during exploration, interpretation, early field development and increased recovery from existing assets.

As an international oil and gas services company, with headquarters in Oslo, AGR is ideally placed to provide them with the necessary regional experience and in-depth knowledge of the Norwegian Continental Shelf required in this instance.

Sjur Talstad, AGR’s Executive Vice President, said: “This agreement signifies once again that we are providing our clients with real value because our understanding goes that bit deeper – not only do we supply the expertise in the complex area of reservoir management but we also have the regional experience needed for implementing these projects. Our Reservoir Management team has more than 15 years’ experience of this region, from the North Sea, Norwegian Sea up to the Barents Sea.”

Over the past 5 years, AGR has completed over 1,000 reservoir studies. These have a global coverage in all major basins and reservoir types, including challenging environments such as HPHT, gas condensate, heavy oil reservoirs and complex fractured reservoirs.

R15S
Europa’s meest krachtige profielbuigmachine

Kersten Europe levert compleet projectmanagement. Naast het buigen van profielen en platen, kunt u bij Kersten Europe terecht voor engineering, prototyping, uitvoeren van bijkomende werkzaamheden (zoals 3D op maat snijden en lassen) logistiek en transport.
